What it is
Zimislecel is an allogeneic islet-cell therapy grown from stem cells and infused once into people with type 1 diabetes and no detectable insulin production, alongside glucocorticoid-free immunosuppression. Among the 12 participants in the efficacy analysis, 10 became fully insulin-independent at one year, and every participant was free of severe hypoglycemia. Detectable C-peptide after infusion confirmed that the manufactured islets engrafted and released insulin in response to meals.
Why it matters
Type 1 diabetes destroys the body's insulin-producing islets, and donor-islet transplants have been limited by scarce cadaveric tissue. Restoring insulin independence in 10 of 12 recipients from a manufactured, scalable cell source removes that supply ceiling. That the cohort had no severe hypoglycemic events points to restored physiologic glucose control, not just a lower average blood sugar.
