What it is
The authors assessed whether scientific attention to climate tipping elements matches their risk-relevant characteristics, analysing 20,736 records from 2000 to 2025 that address 14 tipping elements. Attention concentrated on the Greenland Ice Sheet and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, while abrupt thaw of boreal permafrost and the North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre received comparatively limited attention despite their relatively low estimated warming thresholds. Explicit engagement with the dynamics that make tipping points risky, such as abrupt transitions, hysteresis and irreversibility, was also limited.
Why it matters
Climate tipping points have moved from a theoretical concern to a practical challenge for climate-risk assessment and governance. The authors note that these patterns of attention may influence which tipping risks can most readily be assessed, prioritized and governed.
